Singles Awareness Day? What a joke.

Who comes up with these things? And when did Valentines Day only become a joyous time for those in relationships?

Why is a holiday about LOVE strictly associated with a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship?

Every. Single. Year. You get on Facebook. February 14th. This is what you find:

"Happy Singles-Awareness Day everyone!"

"I hate Valentines Day :P"

"I wish I had someone for Valentines Day :("

So ridiculous!

Let's address the first one..

If you're seriously taking a holiday about love personally..maybe you have some issues. Like really. Being single..yeah, not so bad. Sure, I'm only 16..but, from what I've seen, people in relationships seem quite..preoccupied. Busy. Caught up. While it might be nice to be "preoccupied" and "busy", being relaxed, laid-back, and care-free is pretty darn nice too. Maybe "singles-awareness" isn't such a bad title to slap onto Valentines Day. That is, if you're not being sad or sarcastic about it.

Why would you hate the "holiday of love"? This goes back to taking it personally. Just because there's a holiday with hearts, chocolate, cards, hugs, and kisses once a year doesn't mean that the world is out to attack you. "Ha ha ha, we celebrate Valentines Day 'cause we're in a relationship but you're not..so you can't". I'm pretty sure people aren't walking around saying or thinking that. And if you know people that are..maybe you should think about your current acquaintances ;)

Why do you need or want someone for Valentines Day? Obviously with this "need" and "want", I'm talking relationship "need" and "want". This is pretty much the worst one. It's sorta..selfish. If you have friends and family, what more could you possibly need?! There are some people who don't even have that! Don't friends and family deserve your love just as much, if not more, than some guy or girl you bequeath with the title boyfriend or girlfriend?

The answer is..yes. Yes, they do.

Personal belief:

Valentines Day was never about being in a relationship. Of any kind.

To me, Valentines Day is that thing. You know, when you're in elementary school and you sit up all night making cute little cards with candy for all your classmates. At 5-11 years old, you aren't thinking about "man, I wish I had a boyfriend" or "wow, this day is depressing". You're thinking, "YESSS! I get to give all my friends some candy and get some back! Awesome!" It's innocent..unadulterated love. Sure, it might just be a love for candy, but I don't remember there being one Kindergarten-5th grade Valentines Day where I wouldn't sit up all night making my Valentines cards. And not just making them..but making them as perfect as possible. Perfect because I cared.

So..

There it is..

My "complaints" about Valentines Day.

PS- I don't know if it was me, but this whole post feels..disconnected. Right?
